The past couple of months have been pretty exciting. Our new collection of Zombie Safe Zones are becoming a huge success, and not to mention saving lives worldwide;) One of the questions we get asked when creating these colourful and unique maps is 'How do you choose the safe zone?'. Well we thought we would share with you the details behind the process of choosing a safe zone.
4 steps in choosing a Safe Zone in order of importance.
1. Area and Land development
The first thing we look for is National Parks or a Wild Life Refuge. You want large acreage and distance from civilization. Some people ask, well why didn't you route me to the top of the Empire state building. Well the simple answer is because you'd starve to death and eventually be zombie bait. Another question we get asked often is "Why is my safe zone a 6 hr drive away?" Well it's 6 hrs away because that's 6 hrs away from your heavily populated city of walking corpses!
Next is elevation. If there's one thing we know, zombies hate to climb. They are slow moving, clumsy and don't have the ability pull them selves up higher than anything waist level. Elevation is key because it creates a border between you and them. Even if the area development seems more robust, we would still go with a higher elevated land choice.
3. Food & Water
Third we look for somewhere where there is an abundance of food and water. Because without food and water you can't survive! Most every heavily forested area has an abundance of food, that's why food is 3rd on the list Once the area and elevated land had been chosen, chances are the food will naturally come. The trick is finding 'safe' food to eat and water to drink. Fish are an easy catch and do not attract any danger, however big game catches like bear and wildcat are often not recommended. You may have a better fighting chance against a zombie than a bear.
Least important on the list, but only if you prepare, is temperature. If you can make fire you can last an entire winter in temperature below 0. Also to note, a cold climate is preferable to a hot climate when it comes to zombies. Everyone has dreams of relaxing in a hot tropical safe zone destination, however zombies react differently to the cold slowing them down and cramping their already dehydrate bodies. If a climate is slightly colder, we will choose that over a warmer one.
And there you have it. Once all this information is gathered we trace out a map of the State, Province or Country, then route the starting city to the chosen safe zone destination using Google maps. Easy? Not really, it all takes a bit of time and research, but as we always say - BETTER TO PREPARE THAN TO BE EATEN!
